The advantages of DSLR include lens interchangeability, high speed capability to capture sports and other fast action, and a viewfinder that is through the lens. If, however, none of these things matter very much to you, and you just want a light camera to carry around in your pocket on vacation or at family get-togethers, then what is often called a ?point-and-shoot? will probably fill your needs. Be advised. though, that a point and shoot camera with an electronic viewfinder is the best option. Those with optical viewfinders are frustrating at times in that it is hard to tell exactly what you are photographing, and if you are in bright light the glare will make it tough to see the viewfinder at all!
