Making Big Money In Advertisement Photography

By Alison Heath

In the world of photography, advertisement photography can be deadly competitive. Forget other forms of photography if you want to be rolling in the dollars - this is an art and a business at the same time, but mostly a business.

Advertising is the lifeblood of most, if not all companies, because after all, you need to make your product known to sell it. Companies want to tell the reader that their product is best - so you must be able to match this.

A photographer is required to be technically skilled and creative enough to make something so simple look so attractive. Close enough is just not good enough. Close enough will not sell a product.

One thing to remember if you want to become an advertisement photographer is that you have to know the client's needs and understand them. The best way of understanding this is pick up a magazine and look at the ads. Study each image. Movie billboards can also be observed, as well as billboards advertising common products.

Most parts of advertisement photography can be classed as still life photography. So if you are interested in taking images for the advertisement market your first job is to set up your own home studio. This would be your Ground Zero for all practice activities.

You can try practicing with everyday objects you see at home. Start off with a few glasses. But when taking a picture, remember that art is pretty much thrown out of the window when you're trying to sell a product.

A larger, bulkier camera would be the second primary thing you need. Buy lenses that would bring the best out of your photos. When it comes to advertisement photography, you have to go with slide film. This is because your client might want your images to be posted up on a billboard.

But the third, and most important thing you need would be a portfolio of your previous creations. This can be sent to advertising agencies or can be shown directly to a company. Have a few backup copies ready at all times. Create your own website. Online advertising is the land of milk and honey as far as advertising is concerned. Choose a variety of different images when composing your portfolio.

If you are thinking of using an advertisement agency, get their guidelines from them. These should be very helpful to you in understanding the market. If your photography is nonpareil in its quality, then your chances of hooking up with a reputable agency should be very good.

Advertisement can be seen everywhere - and about eighty percent of all ads use photography. An effective advertising tagline may only say a few short words, but a picture, as the saying goes, says a thousand words.
