How To Become A Tween Model

By Jennifer Collins

The thought of being a tween model can be very exciting; having everyone look at you, getting your makeup and hair done by professionals, being the person that everyone wants to watch. However, the life of a tween model may be very different from what you might expect. Becoming a model can be one of the best experiences of your life, but there are some things you must know before you begin modeling if you want to have a happy, successful career as a tween model.

Firstly, start by giving some thought to what you want to get from the industry. While there have been some tween models that were discovered by a major designer or agent and skyrocketed to success, many more worked for a long time to become successful. You must stand back and take a good look at yourself, and decide whether you have what it takes to be a model. If you are interested in fashion modeling, start by taking off all your makeup and pulling your hair back into a ponytail. Models should have a great smile, good skin, and a symmetrical face. If you have a unique feature about you, don't look at this as a negative thing. The fashion industry likes originality!

Now, if you want to move forward, talk to your parents in order to get permission from them. Since you are under 18, being a tween model will require a lot of time and commitment on your parent's behalf, so this require a team effort within your family. Keep in mind that there are lots of companies and "agencies" that want to take advantage of tweens hoping to become models. These so-called agencies will promise you big dreams, like starring on your own television show or being the next major fashion model. However, to be successful, they tell you that you have to spend a fortune on modeling classes, hair and makeup, and high priced photographers. In truth, these things are not necessary to become a successful tween model. If you would like to take modeling classes and have the disposable income, go ahead and take one. However, you can learn just as much by speaking with other working models, watching fashion shows on television or online, and practicing high fashion walks and poses.

Once you are ready to become a tween model, you should begin by contacting reputable modeling agencies. Many of these agencies have open calls where you will get a chance to talk to agents. If they find that you are a right fit for the agency, they will then start finding auditions for you to attend. Be prepared to go on dozens of auditions before you book any jobs. Make sure that you are ready to be a model- that doesn't mean that you show up looking nice, although that is important. It means that you are fully prepared and ready to be a professional- always arrive early, have headshots and a resume in hand, and go over questions that might be asked by the casting director. Dress in simple, elegant clothing that won't distract from your look- you want the casting directors to be able to picture you in anything.

Beginning a career as a tween model is fun and exciting, and it can lead you to a successful adult career in modeling, acting, or performing. Make sure that if you want to be a tween model, you find the right agency to help represent you, and be ready to study modeling the same way you would any subject in school. Don't forget to enjoy the experience, and be ready to work hard!
