Tips For Choosing A Fashion Design School

By Adriana Noton

So the time has come to head for a unique, personal future and you have chosen to be a fashion designer. Or, maybe you have always known this would be your calling. It takes someone special to make this choice, someone who really wants to put their own personal stamp on the world. Now that you know what to do, the only question that remains is how to choose a fashion design school. A few simple tips can help.

First, check whether or not the college is accredited. Educational institutions are carefully evaluated and high standards have to be met in order to earn accreditation. These standards ensure that your education will achieve a clear purpose, strengthen interpersonal relationships, increase access to the profession, and be modern and relevant. It would take a lot of work to find all of this out on your own, so trust accreditation as a mark of quality.

Second, consider where the school is located. This industry thrives in certain locations. A fashion capital will clearly give its students greater opportunities within the profession. If it is not possible to move to one of these trendy cities, then look for a location that offers opportunity.

Next, consider the facilities that the educational institution provides. They should have modern equipment, like that used in the top houses. Ask about digital pattern design and industrial grade knitting machines. Ask what textiles you will have to work with and ask about the variety that will be available. It is important to be fully confident and prepared to work once you graduate.

Next, check up on the staff. Find out what kind of real world experience the professors who will be teaching you have. Theory is fine and good, but it also needs to be applicable. Someone who has extensive experience working in this industry is bound to have a good idea about what is relevant and what is not. An experienced person will also be a better guide as you prepare to enter the workforce.

Finally, check if the school has any professional contacts. It should offer several opportunities for an internship. Find out if the school has any affiliations with local businesses. Contact businesses located near the educational institution and ask what impression graduates of this school have made. Ask for examples of the types of jobs graduates have gone on to do. Also, ask for the contact information of recent graduates so you can talk to them directly and ask how they would rate the education they received. An education is no guarantee of a stellar career, but the opportunity of a place to start should be provided.

To start college is to begin living life on your own terms. This is why it is important to make sure you have a strong start. You have every right to expect your education to be practical and modern. It should also give ample opportunity to make professional connections, so that you enter the workforce completely prepared.

Following these helpful tips will factor out educational institutions that do not meet your standards. Take the time to make comparisons. Make sure that, whichever fashion design school you choose, it leads you into a better future.
