A Guide to Siam Reap in Cambodia

By Becky Padmore

Siem Reap is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia, and is the gateway to the incredible Angkor Wat temples. In the past Cambodia has gone through very troubled times but it's a country blessed with natural beauty and an almost mystical quality. The country is now peaceful and makes an interesting travel destination with some amazing sites on offer. Here is a guide to making the most of your stay:

Accommodation and getting around - Siam Reep has a wide range of accommodation ranging from guests houses to big hotels. There is something to suit all budgets but make sure you do your research before you go. Tuk Tuks (motorized carts) are the best way to travel- they allow you to photograph on the go and they are also great fun! They are also very cheap, only costing around $12 for a full day.

Attractions - Angkor Wat - This is the most popular attraction by far. Its image is iconic around the world and its beauty is unparalleled. It's actually a temple complex built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. To get in you can buy tickets for one, three or seven days. Visiting hours are 5am -5:30pm and the ticket booth is approx. 2 km from Angkor Wat.

Landmine Museum - This is an important museum which also provides education and support for families and people who have been affected by landmines. Its thoroughly worthwhile morning or afternoon out.

The markets - These are a great attraction offering a great selection of souvenirs and fresh produce. Try the oldest market Phsar Chas which offers silks, silverworks, carvings, statuary, art and handicrafts as well as t-shirts, post cards, boot-legged DVDs and books.

Floating Village - A floating village is an amazing place to see how humans are able to modify themselves to live in their surroundings. There are 200-300 houses built on wooden platform and some on old boats, tied up at the bottom of the lake. It's a fascinating place where you shouldn't forget to bring your camera.
