Tokina Lens Review - A Photographer's Guide

By Luke Darma

In this article, I will be doing a quick Tokina lens review. Basically, I will tell you what this lens is all about, what kind of lens do they make and for which camera mount. By reading this article, you will have greater understanding about Tokina lenses. You will then be able to use this knowledge to select the best lens for your photography needs.

First of all, you need to know that Tokina is a third party lens maker. This means that they do not make lenses for their own camera, but rather they make lenses for other camera mounts. As of the time of this writing, they make lenses for Canon, Nikon and Sony DSLR cameras. Many photographers have used it extensively in their camera lens arsenal.

Tokina's first type of lens is zoom lenses. They will need to compete with many lens manufacturers out there, particularly Nikon, Canon and Sony. However, Tokina has proven to be a player in the market because they can give good quality and competitive price at the same time. This is why they are the ideal third party lens maker.

The kind of zoom lenses that Tokina is very well known about is wide angle lenses. They currently make wide angle lenses for both full frame and cropped sensor DSLR camera. You can use the full frame lens on the cropped sensor DSLR camera, but not the other way around as this will give you vignetting on the lens border.

The other lens that they make is Tokina macro lens. A macro lens is simply a lens that allows you to focus closer in order to take a close up shot of a subject. All these macro lenses have a 1:1 macro magnification ratio which means that they will be able to capture subject in real life size. This is a great feature to have for all macro photography lovers.

They only make two macro lenses at the time of this writing. One lens for cropped sensor. Full frame lens are the next one. So many photographers have used both lenses and many are very happy. The lenses are built like a tank and without compromise.

Tokina also makes another lens for creative purpose photography called the Fisheye lens. A fisheye lens is simply a lens deliberately made with extreme barrel distortion for creative photography purpose. The typical use of this lens is aerial photography, underwater photography or indoor photography. Some people also use this lens for portraiture, especially with children.

All in all, I can only say that Tokina is a very good lens manufacturer. For beginner, take a look at their ultra wide angle lens. All are very sharp and solid. The build is so well made that it will rival most lenses. They also give very aggressive pricing which should appeal to photographers on a budget.
